Your baby is choking only with bottle feeding but not with breast feeding means there’s no chance of abnormal anatomical communication between food pipe(oesophagus)and wind pipe(trachea) otherwise he would have choked with breast feeding also. In my opinion at this age coordination between sucking and swallowing is poor and with bottle feeding large amount of milk is poured in babies oral cavity without much effort as against breastfeeding which requires active sucking and in which small amount of milk is poured in baby’s oral cavity. So choking is possible with bottle feeding. Secondly avoid bottle feeding in supine position, raise baby’s head and chest at least to 45 degrees to avoid regurgitation of milk back to throat leading to choking. Third thing burp nicely frequently during feeds and after feeds also. With advancing age of baby coordination between sucking and swallowing will develop and this problem will gradually subside
Next Steps
Avoid bottle feeding in supine position, raise baby’s head and chest at least to 45 degrees to avoid regurgitation of milk back to throat leading to choking. Third thing burp nicely frequently during feeds and after feeds also
Health Tips
Seek immediate medical advice if baby looks breathless or you notice bluish discolouration of skin.
