Medicine is safe.. Side effects may include weight gain, deranged lipid profile for ozapin and deranged liver enzymes with valproate. But the side effects depend on the dose of the medicine. You are taking the lowest possible dosage of both medications for an adult. Even with these side effects the medications are beneficial as they prevent further relapse of ATPD symptoms. One can monitor weight, lipid profile and LFT to check if side effects are occurring or not. Pls do not worry about the side effects and continue monitoring. For the first episode of ATPD 6 months medication is good advice.

Yes — both medicines are generally safe to take for 6 months when prescribed and monitored properly for ATPD (Acute & Transient Psychotic Disorder).
Why 6 months?
ATPD has a high risk of relapse if treatment is stopped too early. Most guidelines recommend at least 6 months after recovery to ensure full remission and prevent recurrence.
Common side effects to watch for:
Olanzapine 5 mg
• Sleepiness / sedation
• Weight gain, increased appetite
• Increase in sugar or cholesterol (metabolic changes)
Divalproex 500 mg
• Mild tremors
• Weight gain
• Gastric discomfort
• Rarely: liver enzyme changes (hence blood tests)
What makes it safe:
• Low–moderate doses
• Regular follow-up with psychiatrist
• Periodic blood tests (LFT, sugars, lipids if advised)
Important advice:
• Do not stop suddenly, even if you feel better
• If you notice excessive sleepiness, fast weight gain, tremors, or mood changes — inform your doctor
• Lifestyle measures (diet + light exercise) help reduce side effects
Overall, benefits outweigh risks when taken as advised. Your doctor’s plan is appropriate.
As per guidelines , a minimum of 6 months course of treatment is suggested for ATPD for remission of illness. However the treatment duration may vary in different patients based on the progression of illness. The side effect profile of drugs also varies between patient to patient ( i.e a same dose of medication may cause side effect in one and may not in other). Hence a regular monitoring by psychiatrist to identify these symptoms and titration of medication is needed. Some of the common side effects with prescribed medication may be sedation, weight gain, metabolic changes and tremors.
