Well you already answered your query. Our brain plans for the future ,weighs pros and cons etc. Similarly it can also have common negative assumptions such as comparison, labelling oneself (as no good or hopeless etc) , magnifying the problems, seeing only the negatives but not the positives, assuming the worst , personalizing etc.
Learning to first identify your negative thoughts then learning to change them by writing more adaptive thoughts can help if you go regularly to a psychiatrist or Clinical Psychologist trained in CBT.
