Hello Doctor's,
My mother fractured her ankle last week, she wore a temporary cast. now a Doctor is suggesting operation (with metal plates)since it is not hairline fracture.I consulted one more Doctor and he said No to it considering my mom's age.(56y) What are the complications of operation ? Shall we go for it or not? I have attached X-ray report .

You should go for surgery for early mobility. Plaster cast can also be done but it can lead to stiffness & its duration is also long which can lead to stiffness.
Next Steps
Consult your surgeon & get all the pre op tests done.
Health Tips
Surgery will lead to early recovery & more stability at the fracture site.
Go for the surgery....
AGE IS NO CONTRAINDICATION FOR SURGERY....only that your patient should be fit for anaesthesia.
Get her evaluated by anaesthesiologist ..these cases are done under regional anaesthesia..which is pretty safe.
Next Steps
Surgery offers early rehabilitation and return to work.
Health Tips
Conservative management with cast has its own side effects including stiffness which is a devastating complication.
