Well, let me tell you a little bit about renal angiomyolipoma (AML) so you can understand it better. Angiomyolipomas are rare growths that form in the kidney. They are made up of different amounts of tissue that look like blood vessels, smooth muscle, and fat. Most AMLs are not dangerous, but there have been reports of AMLs turning into cancerous cells. Most AMLs occur in isolated cases. The rest are mostly caused by some genetic conditions, such as tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).
Among people who have symptoms, those related to bleeding seem to be the most common. These include pain in the abdomen or flank (caused by the mass effect of the bleeding), blood in the urine, high blood pressure, anaemia, and decreased kidney function.
Even though ultrasound can give hints about the diagnosis, it is not enough to prove it. Imaging, preferably magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast or computed tomography (CT) with or without contrast is a better choice.
Most people with sporadic AML that is smaller than 6 cm go through routine surveillance (with imaging to judge changes in the AML over time). But if the symptoms are too much to handle or if the person works in a high-risk job, like being a pilot, they might need treatment.
I hope that this information is helpful.
