Alcohol Addiction
Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to seek professional guidance regarding my elder brother, Mr. Faraz Iqbal, who is 40 years old. He has been struggling with severe alcohol addiction for many years, though the exact duration is unclear. Our family is deeply concerned about his health and well-being, as he has lost control over his drinking and consumes alcohol daily, often to the point of intoxication. Despite our repeated efforts, he has been unable to stop on his own. We would sincerely appreciate your advice regarding possible treatment options, including any medical interventions such as prescribed medications or injections that may help him reduce or quit alcohol consumption. Kindly let us know the appropriate steps we should take in this situation and whether professional rehabilitation or supervised treatment is recommended. Your guidance and support in this matter would be highly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration. Yours sincerely, Anas Iqbal

Hi Anas,as per what you have described, your brother has become dependent on alcohol.when the dependence is high ,it is often difficult to quit on his own due to craving and withdrawl symptoms on reducing the dose.Professional help is needed. You should consult to a Psychiatrist and take proper treatment and regular followup for your brother. Treating addiction needs motivation and will from patient side. If he is relapsing frequently then deaddiction centre is a prompt choice.
Next Steps
consult a psychiatrist.
Health Tips
Dont give disulfiram like drugs on your own without patient knowledge and doctors consultation. It can be life threatening.

Your brother’s pattern of daily, uncontrolled alcohol use suggests moderate to severe alcohol dependence. This is a medical condition, not just a habit, and usually requires structured treatment. Sudden stopping at home without supervision can be risky because alcohol withdrawal can cause serious symptoms like tremors, seizures, or confusion.
Next Steps
1. Arrange a consultation with a psychiatrist or de-addiction specialist. 2. Get basic tests done: • Liver function test (LFT) • CBC • Blood sugarKidney function 3. Start medically supervised detox (at home or in a center, depending on severity). 4. After detox, begin anti-craving medicines such as: • Naltrexone • Acamprosate • Disulfiram (in selected cases) 5. Add counseling or rehab support, which is essential for long-term recovery.
Health Tips
• Speak to him calmly and without blame; motivation works better than pressure. • Ensure proper nutrition, especially vitamin B1 (thiamine). • Remove alcohol from the home environment. • Encourage support groups or structured rehab if home treatment fails. With timely medical care and family support, alcohol dependence is very treatable, and many patients regain a stable and healthy life. If you’d like, I can help you plan the first consultation or treatment pathway.
