Albendazole
Hi, My son is 2years 10 months. 12kg weight. His last dose of Albendazole was on September. Recently when I took him for a check up doctor advised to give another dose In March. Since beginning of March he was having frequent cold and cough and he just recovered. I thought of giving albendazole this week. Today after dinner he pooped normally but kept his hands constantly in bum after that. He kept scratching his anal area now and then but slept . I doubted and checked inside his trousers there was one small white live worm. He has no fever or other symptoms..he was itching frequently for an hr. I guess once the worm came out he got free and Slept. I removed the worm washed his bum with warm water. Can I give albendazole tomorrow morning.. now it's midnight. Can I give albendazole after breakfast? But doctor usually advised us this at night previously.

As a worm is seen, we have to identify the worm. Specific treatment may be needed for that particular species. Get a stool routine test done to identify the worm eggs under a microscope. Give treatment only after diagnosis

Can you give Albendazole tomorrow morning? Yes, absolutely safe. It does NOT have to be at night only. 2. Can it be given after breakfast? Yes. Best given after food (morning or night both fine). ⸻ Recommended treatment (for your child – 2y 10m, 12 kg) • Albendazole 400 mg – single dose • Repeat same dose after 2 weeks (VERY IMPORTANT to prevent reinfection) ⸻ Important points (this matters more than medicine) Pinworms spread very easily within family: • Treat all family members at the same time • Keep nails short • Hand washing (especially after toilet & before food) • wash underwear, towels, bedsheets in hot water • Morning bath (removes eggs laid overnight)

This history is suggestive of pinworm infestation (Enterobius vermicularis), which commonly presents with anal itching at night and visible small white worms, and as per IAP/AAP guidance, treatment can be started once the child is stable and not acutely ill. Yes, you can give Albendazole tomorrow, there is no need to wait for night specifically. It can be given after breakfast or any convenient time, as food does not significantly affect its efficacy. For your child (2 years 10 months, ~12 kg), the usual dose is Albendazole 400 mg single dose (over-the-counter), and it is important to repeat the same dose after 2 weeks to prevent reinfection. Along with medication, advise parents that all household contacts should also take a single dose (after consulting if any contraindication), and strict hygiene is very important—keep nails short, ensure handwashing after toilet and before food, daily morning bathing, and washing of undergarments and bedsheets in hot water to reduce recurrence.

If worms are still present, don’t give albendazole, he should take other tablet for worms in stool, consult doctor for other tablet.
