3 Months Baby Boy - Vitamin K not given
Hi doctor, My sister delivered a healthy baby boy 3 months back in my hometown.but there the doctors have somehow missed to give him Vitamin K.She somehow again checked and they said that it has to be given within 4 weeks it seems. So she is worried if it would be a problem for his health in the futurw because of this.Baby is healhy and fine now.We are just worried that it is missed. Is there any alternative medication or diet for this Vitamin K.or is it okay if its not given?.Please suggest. Thank you.

Ideally, vit k is given after birth to prevent vit k deficiency bleeding. But, if it is missed...it is better to give 1 dose now as it can prevent late onset vit k deficiency bleeding( which can happen even upto 6months of age)..so, it's better to give it than not giving at all at this age. Consult your pediatrician for the same.

Hi there. Intramuscular vitamin k needs to be given to all newborns within 6 hours of delivery. Alternative option can be oral, though it's less effective. But there is no use giving it now. Fortunately the baby didnot develop any symptoms of vitamin K deficiency. If he is fine, no antibiotics given to him, no long term medication to the mother- then it's fine. Just continue exclusive breastfeeding and vitamin D drops. Take care
