13-Year-Old Girl with Abdominal Pain
My 13 year-old sister has been experiencing pain near the navel, fever, and vomiting for the past 2 days. The pain is constant and she feels weak. She hasn’t shown much improvement. We are worried it might be something serious like appendicitis or stomach infection. Please advise whether we should do an ultrasound or any urgent tests

If you are worried you should get an opinion from a General Surgeon in your area. A clinical examination is the best method to diagnose appendicitis or stomach infection (not an ultrasound).

Appendicitis often starts with pain around the navel (periumbilical) and then moves to the right lower abdomen within hours. • Associated fever and vomiting make appendicitis more likely than a simple stomach infection. • Other possibilities: ovarian pathology (if she’s started menstruating), gastroenteritis, urinary tract infection, or mesenteric lymphadenitis — but appendicitis is the one we don’t want to miss because it can progress to perforation within 24–48 hours.
Next Steps
Go to the emergency department or see a pediatric surgeon right away — today. • Do not wait to see if it gets better at home, because if it is appendicitis, delay increases the risk of rupture.
