Mother's diet and weight
Nutrition of a
pregnant woman
Formation of the fetal bone system is accompanied by an increase in the female body’s demand for
calcium. Micronutrient deficiency is facilitated by the changes in parathyroid gland functioning. Calcium is an essential mineral for the human body. It is involved in the functioning of skeletal muscles, regulates heartbeat, maintains normal blood pressure, participates in blood coagulation, and increases resistance to stress. Contrary to common opinion, the greatest amount of calcium is contained not in dairy products, but in sesame and almonds.
However, it is just impossible to eat a lot of almonds or sesame seeds. When introducing dairy products into the diet, it is necessary to remember that the more fat they contain, the less calcium is available for absorption. Fat binds calcium and forms rather stable compounds, which cannot be destroyed in the human digestive tract. Based on these considerations, whole milk is much more useful than sour cream or cream. Unfortunately, cottage cheese is also not so rich in calcium, because most of the trace elements are transferred into the whey during its production.
A lot of calcium is contained in cheese and low-fat yogurt. The champion of the calcium content among vegetables is celery. A lot of calcium is contained in dried fish, sardines, and very little - is contained in cooked fish, beef, and bread. A pregnant woman needs a daily intake of 1200-1500 mg (0.0525 Oz, 0.0033 lb) of calcium, and, unfortunately, this need cannot be satisfied by artificially created calcium supplements. Calcium assimilation is possible only in combination with phosphorous and
vitamin D, moreover, it requires the presence of magnesium, zinc and carotene.
Medical preparations containing this range of substances are not indicated for pregnant women. However, you can deal with the calcium deficiency by eating sufficient amounts of fish
liver, beef liver, seaweed, shrimp, herring, and mackerel. By this week the average weight gain for women with a normal body weight amounts to 3,8 kg (134 Oz, 8.4 lb).
