IN LAME TERMS YOU CAN SAY THAT FOLIC ACID IS A REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH TONIC. IT HELPS IN DEVELOPING THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM N ALSO PREVENTS ANAMOLIES IN THE BABY. IT IS NOT COMPULSORY TO TAKE THE TAB, BUT THERE IS NO HARM IF YOU TAKE IT

Hello, Folic acid supplementations dramatically lowers the chance of birth defects in your baby such as neural tube defects and possibly other birth abnormalities such as congenital heart disease, urinary tract problems, oral facial clefts, limb defects, and some pediatric cancers. Folic acid helps produce and maintain new cells, and is important during the early embryonic and fetal periods when rapid cell division and growth are occurring. Also check to make sure that your multivitamin doesn't contain more than the recommended daily allowance of 770 mcg RAE (2,565 IU) of vitamin A, unless most of it's in a form called beta-carotene. Getting too much of a different kind of vitamin A can cause birth defects.

Just Understand one thing that whenever u have folic acid it will be supplied to ur body first and then to ur baby so u need to replenish ur stores first and thats the reason its started at least 3 months prior to ur planned pregnancy, Ok. Just follow ur Gynaec.
