Periods happen due to NON fertilisation of the ovum ( egg ) released in the female body. It has nothing to do with semen in vagina or uterus.
When a man and woman have sex for pregnancy, the most important days to have sex are ONLY few, max 2. These are the days on which ovum is released in the female body. There is NO way to find these days except by doing sonography.
sex done before menses are usually not much help in creating a pregnancy. so this answers your query
