I have a cavity on my back molar that is very close to the pulp and the dentist said he could try to save it after some antibiotics. However, he said the option will probably be: have it pulled or pay $1000 for a root canal; he said Medicaid insurance wouldn't cover a R.C. The problem is he wants to see me next week, but my tooth is in so much pain I'm unsure if I can wait that long. Also, I would take Ibuprofen, but after taking it for a week now, I've gotten severely dehydrated. What do I do?

Please try to visit another dentist. Avoid eating or drinking anything hot. You can try ice pack from outside if the pain is too much and elevate your head while sleeping.
Till you can see a dentist, which is absolutely necessary, you may try taking a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of boiling water makes a pain-killing mouthwash which can possibly clean away debris that is irritating the tooth and help reduce swelling. Swirl it around for about 30 to 45 seconds before spitting it out. Saltwater cleanses the area around the tooth and can draw out some of the fluid that causes swelling. Repeat this treatment as often as needed.
Hi,if the pain is not subsiding then you may either get a root canal started from some other dentist or get it extracted if you cannot bear with t he pain, avoid chewing from that side and do some rinses with lukewarm water and a pinch of salt.
