Risk of infection due to contamination
So I went for tetanus and anti rabies vaccines in one of the biggest hospital in India. I bought the injections from pharmacy and handed over to the nurse in ER. She filled the syringes and all that far from my sight. She came to me with a steel tray which had a paper sheet spread but the Paper sheet had big BLOOD stain on it. I was already terrified and anxious of series of incidents happened to me so I couldn’t say anything that time. She had alcohol dipped cotton i guess which was kept in that dirty tray. She used that to rub on both my arms before injecting it. Now i am terrified as I searched that having blood is major breach of infection. I want to know how much risky is it to get any disease because of this? I will go for second rabies dose and speak to the administration there but till then i am really scared and anxious. Can someone please confirm if its risky or the danger is only from direct syringe from patient to patient? Thanks!

Risk of infection in this situation is extremely low, especially if a new syringe was used. Such infections spread through direct needle sharing, not surface contact. Consult me for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Dear Patient, From your description, it sounds like there was a breach of proper infection control, which understandably caused anxiety. However, the risk of acquiring blood-borne infections (like HIV, hepatitis B or C) from alcohol swabs or paper tray contact is extremely low. Most viruses cannot survive long on surfaces, and alcohol usually kills many pathogens. What you should do - Do not panic, but remain observant for any symptoms such as fever, rashes, or unusual fatigue - Continue your rabies and tetanus vaccination schedule as planned - Ensure that all future injections are given under strict aseptic precautions - If concerned, you may request a hepatitis B vaccination and follow-up blood tests after 6 weeks for reassurance consult me - If you develop fever, malaise, jaundice, or any unexplained illness - For counseling on infection risk and post-exposure precautions For further guidance and personalized reassurance you may consult me on Practo anytime.
