Erythema (redness) can be caused by any local trauma ( like sharp teeth cusps) in the region. An associated ulceration can cause redness as well. You should consult an Oral Medicine specialist and if the lesion appears suspicious probably, biopsy is advisable to check the nature of the lesion (presence/absence of dysplasia).
