My 2.5 months old baby boy had mild red spots on diaper 3-4 times last month. We had done urine report which shows bacteria present and RBC count as 5. Doctor has given antibiotics for 5 days and suggested for sonography. Is the sonography really required for small baby? Is there any side effect of sonography? Also doctor has given EUMOSONEM M for local penis application for redness. Can we use this cream. Please refer attached report and photo.

Hello, I understand your concern
The urine test shows 5 RBCs/hpf and presence of bacteria, which can suggest a mild urinary tract infection (UTI). The red spot seen in the diaper is likely urine mixed with a small amount of blood, which can happen with a UTI. At this age, even minor UTI findings warrant careful evaluation, as babies can’t express symptoms clearly.
The antibiotic course for 5 days is appropriate and should be completed fully. The Eumosone-M cream (contains steroid and antibacterial/antifungal) can be used locally on the penis if there is redness or irritation, as prescribed. Make sure to apply only a small amount and for the short duration advised.
Yes, sonography (ultrasound of the abdomen/KUB) is safe and non-invasive. It is recommended after any suspected UTI in infants to check for any underlying kidney or urinary tract abnormalities, like: Posterior urethral valves, Vesicoureteric reflux, Hydronephrosis.
There are no side effects of sonography. It doesn’t involve radiation and is done externally, like a regular scan.
Next Steps
Complete the antibiotic course as prescribed.
Proceed with the ultrasound scan as advised.
