I had an extraction of three teeth at a time. After that Dr gave antibiotics, painkillers and other necessary medicines. But now I have completed the antibiotic course as prescribed. However, my gums are still very swollen and since yesterday I have been experiencing tremendous pain.
I feel that something might be stuck in the gum, which could be causing the discomfort.
What should I do now. Kindly guide as early as possible because the pain is unbearable.
Thank you so much for your time and guidance.
Warm regards

It must be condition called dry socket
You have to visit nearest clinic for dry socket dressing which will provide you tremendous relief.
Do warm saline rinses
Take Antibiotics and painkiller coverage for another 3 days.
Thanks
Please visit your dentist again ,they will be able to help you .
Pain post extraction is expected which should tail down over couple of days ,if it doesn't ,means the blood clot over the extraction socket dislodges exposing underlying bone causing extreme sensitivity &pain.
The dentist would put a dressing in the extraction socket which will take care of pain .Hope that helps!
Hi ,
Your problem reflects that there can be food lodgements in that area or there can be dry socket .
My suggestion to you will be visit your dentist as soon as possible and get betadine washes and saline washes done , along with care of not chewing from that side with soft light food etc.
Next Steps
Warm water gargle (3-4 times) a day
Less spicy and Oily food along with no chewing from the wounds side.
Icepack usage if swelling is present around your cheeks
Visit your dentist as soon as possible.
Avoid eating anything hot or hard from the side of extraction .
If you are feeling that something is stucked in gums then do Lukewarm saline rinses and maintain that for few days.
Next Steps
Also once visit to your dentist for a follow up .
Health Tips
1. You can do cold compression.
2. Lukewarm saline rinse
1- do not touch, poke or try to experiment at home.
Within 1st 5 days swelling is normal, rather expected as it indicates your body is trying to heal that region. If it’s more than that and still your gums are swollen than kindly visit your dentist immidiately.
Pain should be getting controlled with pain killers, if it still persist than consult your dentist immidiately.
2. You can start warm water salt gargles 3-4 times a day , it will help soothing the pain and cleaning food lodgement,if any. If it’s more than 48 hours post extraction of your teeth and pain is unbearable please cissy your dentist, they might need to irrigate the socket.
Hello ma’am , firstly don’t panic please
As you say Pain that suddenly becomes severe a few days after extraction — especially after you were starting to feel better — may happen due to dry socket, food particles stuck in the area, infection, or irritation around the stitches and gums.
Based on your symptoms like intense pain, swelling, and the sensation of something being stuck, the extraction site should be examined properly.
Your dentist may clean the area gently, remove any trapped debris, place a soothing medicated dressing, and give medicines if required for pain or infection.
Dry socket is a common condition after wisdom tooth extraction and the pain usually improves only after the area is treated by the dentist.
Next Steps
Please contact or revisit your dentist/oral surgeon as early as possible, ideally today.
You should contact or revisit the oral surgeon/dentist immediately (today if possible).
Severe pain starting after extraction—especially after initial improvement—can indicate:
Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) → very common after wisdom tooth extraction
Food/debris stuck in socket
Infection or pus collection
Inflamed gum tissue/stitches irritation
From your description (“tremendous pain,” swollen gums, feeling something stuck), dry socket or trapped debris is highly possible.
What is usually the best treatment?
The dentist/oral surgeon may do:
Gentle cleaning/irrigation of extraction site
Remove trapped food/debris
Medicated dressing for dry socket
Recheck stitches
Pain-control medicines
Sometimes another antibiotic if infection is present
Dry socket pain often becomes severe around 3–5 days after extraction and painkillers may not help much until the socket is treated locally.
Hello Mam. I understand your concern. As per your given history, slight gums swelling abit whitesh surrounding is usually normal+slight discomfort and pain usually stays for 3-7days. But as you explained, it was extremely painful yesterday night, I would suggest to take the painkiller on SOS. Please don't forget to take Pan-D along with the painkiller prescribed. Observe it for 3more days as the complete healing takes 7-15days but symptoms reside by 7th day.
Next Steps
Gargle with Betadin mouth gargle twice daily.
If symptoms don’t go please visit your Dentist.
Health Tips
Avoid Smoking , Alcohol , Avoid too hot food eg Tea..you can have it after it comes near the room temperature. Keep oral hygiene clean.
Most often patient don't brush teeth properly after extraction, which creates unhygienic environment and delays healing.
Hello ma'am
The pain can be due to secondary infection or dry socket or may be piece of bone or tooth is left behind.
Kindly vist your dentist as early as possible.
Next Steps
kindly rinse with warm salt water 3-4 times a day.
apply ice pack from the outside of cheek
It may be dry socket= alveolar osteitis because extraction of 3 tooth create extraction space if suture is not placed at a site which leads to accumulation of food in the socket or if you spit to harsh the blood clot in the socket dislodge and create dry black empty space which cause severe pain in the tooth
PLEASE visit to the dental clinic they will give zinc oxide eugenol dressing in the socket which help in pain relieve it will take 2-3 weeks to heels so please pe patience
Next Steps
after placing zinc oxide eugenol dressing done
warm saline rinses should be done 4-5 times per day
which promote healing
and stritly avoid smoking tobacco and eating food from affected side
