Folic acid is essential when you start planning for a baby. Your wife must start folic acid supplementation immediately as gives protection from neural tube defect.

Hi
Yes it is good to take it
It will reduce any birth defects in your child
You can start it of your own
And just inform your doc that you are taking
Good luck
Dear Sir, first of all, wish your wife a healthy pregnancy. Supplements are required by mother and growing foetus, if at all there is some deficiency in body. During delv body might face blood loss. Generally females are anaemic and during pregnancy baby draws all nutrients from mother. Excessive iron or folic may also cause constipation.
