Pain in Left Side

I suffer from an agonising pain in my left side, at the bottom/just below my rip cage, but this pain only comes around when I attempt to sleep. The pain comes and goes every few minutes but gets worse each time so I have to get up and not sleep for the night. The pain feels really hot, as if something was to explode inside of me, but there is never a lasting pain when I'm not trying to sleep. It's as if nothing has happened but i just end up incredibly tired and sleep deprived.
