HIV tests are done for two types of HIV - I &II. Since the virus has a very long latent period, the tests are reliable only for that short time when the tests are done. And if one does not have history of contact with a suspected diagnosed case of AIDS, you can assume that you are seronegative for HIV I &II
Next Steps
If you are posted for a surgical procedure, even if you have got done the test 10 days before, you will have to get them repeated.

Hello. I have reviewed your query regarding the accuracy and necessity of HIV RNA testing. When it comes to early detection after a potential exposure, the timing and type of test are critical for accurate results. 1. Accuracy at 10 Days The Window Period: An HIV RNA test can typically detect the virus within 9 to 11 days after exposure. While it is highly sensitive, a test at 10 days is at the very beginning of the detection window. Accuracy: While an RNA test at 10 days is quite accurate, it is not considered 100% conclusive. Most medical guidelines recommend a follow-up 4th Generation Antigen/Antibody test at 45 days post-exposure for a definitive result. 2. HIV-1 vs. HIV-2 Prevalence: HIV-1 is the most common strain worldwide and in India. HIV-2 is much less common and is primarily found in West Africa, though cases do occur elsewhere. Testing: Most RNA tests specifically look for HIV-1. If there is a specific reason to suspect exposure to HIV-2 (such as travel to a high-prevalence area or a partner known to have HIV-2), a specific test for HIV-2 would be required, as the standard HIV-1 RNA test will not detect it. Next Step I recommend consulting an Infectious Disease Specialist or a General Physician. They can evaluate the nature of the exposure and determine if you should also consider Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) if the exposure was within the last 72 hours, or schedule the appropriate follow-up testing.

An HIV RNA test at 10 days can detect early infection, but it’s not fully conclusive repeat testing at 6 weeks is recommended usually HIV 1 RNA is sufficient unless there’s specific risk for HIV 2

The HIV-1 RNA (PCR) Test is highly sensitive and can detect the virus as early as 10 to 33 days post-exposure, making it the fastest diagnostic tool available. At the 10-day mark, the accuracy is approximately 95–98%, but it is not 100% conclusive because the 'Viral Load' might still be below the detectable limit in some individuals. Regarding your query on HIV-1 vs HIV-2: Clinically, HIV-1 accounts for the vast majority of global infections. HIV-2 is largely restricted to West Africa. While doing both provides absolute certainty, an HIV-1 RNA test usually satisfies the requirement for early detection in most clinical settings."
Next Steps
Confirmation Test: Even if the 10-day RNA test is negative, you must follow up with a 4th Generation p24 Antigen/Antibody (Combo) Test at the 4-week (28 days) mark. This is the gold standard for confirmation. HIV-1 vs HIV-2: If the exposure occurred in a region where HIV-2 is not endemic (like most of Asia or the West), a negative HIV-1 RNA is very reassuring. However, for a complete 'Clearance,' a combo test that detects antibodies for both strains is necessary.
