What you experienced after the intradermal rabies vaccine intradermal injection is actually quite common. A small amount of vaccine fluid or a tiny drop of blood coming out, along with a raised “bleb,” is expected in this technique. It does not reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine.
Regarding your main concern—there is extremely negligible to no risk of HIV transmission in this situation. HIV spreads through specific routes like unprotected sexual contact, transfusion of infected blood, or sharing contaminated needles. It does not spread by casual skin contact or touching an injection site, even if healthcare workers are attending multiple patients.
Similarly, rabies cannot be transmitted from person-to-person through touch or contact with skin. It requires exposure to infected animal saliva entering through a bite or open wound.
The rubbing or touching of the site by healthcare staff, while not ideal practice, does not pose a realistic risk of infection transmission.
Next Steps
There is no need for HIV testing or additional treatment based on this exposure alone. You can continue your rabies vaccination schedule as advised without interruption. You can connect us at 9 3 1 5 6 6 1 5 6 5 for further guidance and support.
