HBsAg positive means that the patient has an infection with the Hepatitis B virus which mainly resides in the liver. It is usually transmitted sexually, blood or blood product transfusions or from mother to child.
HBsAg can be acute or chronic. Chronic means that the patient is positive for more than 6 months. Most patients are asymptomatic carriers that is they have the virus in their body but it does them no harm and are asymptomatic , but at the same time they can easily transmit it to other people. But in some the infection might progress and cause liver cirrhosis ultimately leading to liver failure or even liver cancer. Treatment is usually not required for Asymptomatic carriers. Regular monitoring of HBEAg, HBV Viral loads along with alt and ast will help us determine when treatment is necessary. Highly effective drugs are available with a cure rate of more than 90%.
Drugs to be used depends on the patients clinical status and the presence or absence of other viral infections like HIV or Hepatitis C.
