If it is early stage, better control with eyedrops at this age. If its not controlled in eyesrops or its severely progressing, you may think about surgery. But surgery cannot guarantee you pressure control as well. You may still need medicines after surgery as well. Also the damaged nerves will not get better.

Yes it can be halted, progression can mbe made slow through Anti glaucoma medications and if not controlled through medications then Trabeculectomy which is a pressure control surgery can be done to slow down the progression of disease
