Hi Doctor,
My father inlaw experienced pain in upper torso region today morning he also experienced breathlessness and also vomited once.
We took him to hospital and after conducting ECG, Blood, Abdomen CT it was discovered that he has many stones in gallbladder largest being 15mm. Doctor said Gallbladder stones have caused some injury to his digestive system. He is now admitted in hospital and doctors say he cannot have any oral food or water for next 5 days and his is continuously on drips. But, he is feeling hungry and wants to eat. I want your opinion on this including weather it's ok for him not to take anything orally for 5 days.

Treatment of cholecystitis depends on the severity of the condition and the presence or absence of complications. Uncomplicated cases can often be treated on an outpatient basis; complicated cases may necessitate a surgical approach. Antibiotics may be given to manage infection. Definitive therapy involves cholecystectomy or placement of a drainage device; therefore, consultation with a surgeon is warranted.
Patients admitted for cholecystitis should receive nothing by mouth because of expectant surgery. However, in uncomplicated cholecystitis, a liquid or low-fat diet may be appropriate until the time of surgery.
