My son had fever and a urine infection earlier. He was given Taxim-My son had fever and a urine infection earlier. He was given Taxim-O for a week before the circumcision. After the surgery, he was prescribed Amoxicillin and IbuprofeO for a week before the circumcision. After the surgery, he was prescribed Amoxicillin and Ibuprofen syrup. Later, he complained of gastritis, so we were advised to give Laprazole before food whenever required.
On the 4th day after surgery, he developed high fever along with diarrhea, and he also has throat pain while swallowing. The pediatrician mentioned that diarrhea could be due to the antibiotics and prescribed antibiotics for diarrhea then prebiotic syrup as well. His throat looks red, but he does not have any symptoms of cold.
I just wanted to confirm whether the throat pain could also be related to acidity or antibiotic effects rather than a cold. Could you please advise if we should continue the same medicines or if anything additional is needed?

Hi ma’am,
Diarrhea very commonly happens after using multiple antibiotics, because they disturb gut bacteria. Prebiotic/probiotic is correct treatment.
For throat pain – yes it can be due to acidity / reflux also, especially when child has gastritis history. It is not necessary that throat pain is due to cold.
My advice for now:
• Continue the probiotic syrup regularly for 5–7 days
• Give good oral hydration, ORS if stools are frequent
• Avoid juices / outside food temporarily
• You may continue Laprazole before food for 3–5 days for acidity related discomfort
• Avoid starting any new antibiotic unless fever returns / child becomes more sick
Aapko dubara consult kb Krna?
• child has blood in stools
• very low urine output
• very high fever again
• child looks tired/drowsy
For now there is no need to panic. This looks more like antibiotic-associated diarrhea + acidity. Continue supportive care.

Gastritis and loose stools can happen after taking amoxicillin syrup. The red throat may be due to reflux or could be a new upper airway infection.
For now, continue with the following plan:
• Laprazole for 5 days
• Keep hydration up with WHO ORS, tender coconut water, or plain water
• Avoid spicy and oily foods
• Calpol (paracetamol) for the next 2 days if needed
• A probiotic for 5 days
• Zincogut 5 ml once daily for 2 weeks
If fever continues, urine output drops, breathing becomes fast, your child seems unusually tired, there are more than four episodes of vomiting, or anything else concerns you, please visit your pediatrician.
Diarrhoea and gastritis is very common after any antibiotic course, specifically happens after Amoxicillin. It is advisable to continue antibiotics as advised by the doctor as these side effects are temporary, but infections need to be controlled by antibiotics so as to avoid further complications
Next Steps
1. Continue Lanzoprazole for 5-7 days
2. Continue pro biotic for 5-7 days
3. Avoid heavy foods, keep the diet light.
4. Give appropriate hydration, water, fresh coconut water, yoghurt etc
5. Pain in throat can also be due to Gastritis, or due to dehydration or viral infection itself. Hence you can give SYP paracetamol in case of severe pain. Give plenty of fluids to tackle dehydration.
6. Give ORS sachet as much as required by the child
7. Can add SYP zinc 5ml Od x 14 days, it improves immunity in the child.
8. Consult your pediatrician if following danger signs are present: refusal to feeds, baby is lethargic, decreased activity of child, running high grade fever, blood in stools, persistent vomiting
You can consult me on practo if you have any further doubts.
