Diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Diseas
I would like to provide a brief medical update regarding my 7-year-old son and seek your advice. He has been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and is currently on Pentasa tablets. Despite the medication, he continues to experience stomach pain, particularly after consuming foods made with maida (refined wheat flour) such as bread, pizza, and burgers. An abdominal ultrasound was recently performed, and the report indicates cholangitis, following which an MRI has been recommended for further evaluation. We would like to check: Whether an MRI (or MRCP) is safe for a 7-year-old child If sedation would be required considering his age Any precautions we should take prior to the scan Advice on diet and suitable drinks/beverages for him, given his ongoing abdominal symptoms Kindly let us know your recommendation on proceeding with the MRI and any additional guidance you may have.

Your questions should be sent to Paediatricians by Practo. So resend your question with age as 7yrs and not your age as the sender. They’ve sent it to General Physicians. In principle yes MRCP is fine in children. Alternatively, after a gap of 1 week a repeat Ultrasound should help clarify any questions that his team have. I can imagine it will be very hard to convince a 7yr old not to eat what they love eating. Equally in an attempt to help with one issue, you don’t want the kid to start losing weight either. All the best. www.jgsr-health-education.in

MRI / MRCP is generally safe for a 7-year-old child. It does not use radiation. Sedation may be needed if the child is unable to lie still for 30–45 minutes. This is decided by the radiology team. Before scan: • Follow fasting instructions if sedation is planned • Remove any metal objects • Inform doctor about any allergies or previous reactions Regarding diet, since he has IBD and pain after maida foods, it is better to avoid refined flour, junk food, spicy and oily items. Give soft, home-cooked food, adequate fluids, coconut water, and simple meals as tolerated. As ultrasound shows cholangitis and MRI is advised, it is important to proceed for proper evaluation. Based on your symptoms, this may require proper clinical assessment and prescription. You may book an online consultation with me for detailed evaluation and personalised treatment plan.
