If hemoglobin is less, one needs to take iron. As your anemia is severe to moderate, you need faster growth of hemoglobin as a growing fetus needs good supply of oxygen. Non correction of anemia can cause fetal growth retardation, placental separation and even at times fetal death.
Giving iron by intramuscular injection was a thing that was done on past when iron infusion were risky and good safe, preparations were not available. Iron injections are painful and can cause staining of the injection site due to multiple injections.
If one takes infusion, there are two available iron preparations and one is cheap and one is expensive. let your doctor select the one right for you. You will need to overcome the deficit in iron stores and correct the hemoglobin levels.
After body has got the required dose of iron, it is stored in liver and then used for increasing hemoglobin production which may take a good 1 month.
Next Steps
Do not neglect the injections or infusions, which ever the doctor gives you. Infusions are safe but can cause reactions in some, so always take a responsible relative when you go for infusions and take it slowly over a hour or so.
Health Tips
Even after iron has been loaded in body, hemoglobin prepearation needs other ingredients too like floic acid, vit B12 and proteins and vitamin c. so a healthy diet needs to be maintained till end of pregnancy. Those ladies who have iron deficiency also tend to bleed more at delivery and cesarean section, so after delivery too check the iron and correct it by iron tablets or infusions after delivery too
