it could be lower back vertebra or muscle related. he needs physical examination. The following lifestyle changes may help: - Eat healthy and have a balanced diet. Maintain the weight to a healthy weight as per the BMI(current BMI status is obese). - Get regular exercise to keep your back muscles fit and flexible. - Avoid prolonged sitting. - When you do sit, maintain good posture. - Use proper techniques for lifting (lift with your legs rather than your back). - Avoid frequent bending and twisting. Especially avoid bending, twisting and lifting at the same time. - Avoid situations where your spine is vibrated for long periods of time. - Get enough sleep each day.(Adults require 8 hours of sleep)

Hi.. if it is severe and persistent it is better to rule out the possibility of kidney stones as they too present with back pain on either side...but If the pain reduces then maybe it was just a lower back strain..u can visit a physician near u if the back pain doesn’t come down or increases or he has any urinary symptoms also
Next Steps
Visit physician
