Baby weight gain
My 9 months baby's weight is not increasing properly. His birth weight was 3.6kg, and now, at 9 months, he is 7.2 kg only. He is on breastfeeding and solid food. Not on formula milk. He has always been on the below or lower side of the normal weight chart. His height and milestones are normal. What should I do to increase his weight?

Greetings At 9 months and 7.2 kg, your baby has doubled his birth weight, which is a positive developmental milestone. Since his height and milestones are normal, focus on increasing the calorie density of his solid foods by adding healthy fats like olive oil, butter, or nut pastes. Offer high-calorie options such as avocado, eggs, or full-fat yogurt alongside regular breastfeeding sessions. Monitoring his activity level and ensuring he isn't filling up on water or juice can also help prioritize nutrient-dense meals

At 9 months, a weight of 7.2 kg is on the lower side but if height, activity and milestones are normal, it is not necessarily serious. Continue breastfeeding and focus on increasing calorie-rich complementary feeds 3–4 times/day with 1–2 healthy snacks. Add foods like khichdi with ghee, banana, curd, egg (if taken), dal, potato, paneer, nut powder, etc. Avoid only watery foods. Monitor monthly weight gain rather than comparing with other babies. If there is poor appetite, recurrent loose stools, frequent illness or no further weight gain, consult your pediatrician for evaluation.

3-5 times milk feeds 2-3 times weaning foods should be adequate. Kind of weaning food is also important. If necessary get a check up for monitoring growth.

Don't worry! His weight has doubled from birth and he is hitting all milestones — he is a healthy, lean baby. Just make his food more filling — add ghee to every meal, give banana, egg, paneer, ragi porridge daily. Breastfeed as usual. Small frequent meals work better than big ones.
Next Steps
Visit your pediatrician for a routine weight check and height check.
