Slightly sticky secretions if not irritating and eyes becoming red should not be problem. Clean the eyes with sterile water and cotton before putting to sleep. If there is purulent discharge from eyes and redness consultation is required. Some times nasolacrimal duct blockage can cause problem. It requires regular massage to clear.
Eye discharge/sticky eyes are quite common in young babies and are often due to a blocked tear duct. Gently clean the eye with cotton soaked in clean lukewarm water and massage the inner corner of the eye 4–5 times daily. If there is redness of the eye, swelling of eyelids, or yellow discharge increasing, consult your pediatrician.

Discharge, which is a common occurrence often caused by a blocked tear duct, conjunctivitis (pink eye), or a minor irritation. You should gently clean the area with a soft cloth and warm water, but it is essential to consult a pediatrician for a definitive diagnosis and to see if medicated drops are necessary. Potential causes include a clogged nasolacrimal duct, bacterial or viral infection, or environmental allergens.
