Astigmatism, Development Delay
Hi, My son is around 3 years old and has a development delay. For a few weeks we have noticed that he put pressure on one corner of the eye with finger and then moved his both eyes to one corner and focused on objects which are little far. We visited the paediatric ophthalmologist today and he told us there is refractive error in both eyes and the dilated eye exam needs to be done after that he will be prescribed the number. Also, My kid had Dengue Shock Syndrome when he was 4-5 months old. How much do we need to worry about refractive error issues? Does he need to wear spect's lifetime? Does Dengue Shoch Syndrome have anything to do with this refractive error or my child's development delay? Also, he has some redness in the eyes, so the doctor prescribed moxicip d, moxicip, pataone eye drops for one week. Are these safe? And Does both adults and children both have the same drops?

While it is understandable to try and link past medical events like DSS to current issues, the refractive error is a separate, distinct issue. The recommended dilated eye exam is the most critical next step. It will provide an accurate measurement of the error and help the specialist rule out other issues or prescribe the correct pair of glasses.
Next Steps
consult pediatric ophthalmologist and also get squint opinion

Hello sir, in pediatrics age group, it is routine to do the cycloplegic refraction (dilated eye examination) to prescribe glasses. Kindly get it done. And the severity depends on the refractive error. Duration of wearing the spectacles also depends on how the refractive error progresses. Dengue shock syndrome as such doesn't cause refractive error but it may cause development delay if there was hypoxic injury to the brain. If these drops have been prescribed by an Ophthalmologist then usually they are safe under guidance.
Next Steps
kindly go ahead with dilated eye examination

Hi there, Taking your questions one by one. 1. Regarding the refractive error., at his age it needs power verification with dilating drops (mostly cyclopentolate). So get his dilated power and retina checkup done. 2. Regarding dengue and refractive error, not related directly. 3. Regarding spectacles, will be able to tell you further after seeing the powers. Plus powers tend to decrease with age, minus powers tend to increase with age and cylindrical powers may remain constant. Accordingly we can start glasses and take a call on refractive correction surgery after 18-19yr of age. Nothing concerning now. 4. Dengue and developmental delay can sometimes be related especially if there had been any hypoxic brain injury. Get a pediatric opinion as well. 5. Those drops are safe given under medical guidance, but moxcip-d contains a strong steroid, usually not prescribed for small kids. But can be used under proper guidance. Do review properly with your eye doctor. 6. Adults and kids can use many similar drops not all, when given under medical guidance. Regards.
Next Steps
Get dilated retinal exam and power verification. Continue drops only under advice. Get a consult here for any further queries that you may have.
