The pain could be also due to lack of stability on the knee as the muscles around the knee are weak and are not offering enough support to the knee. He needs to resume his rehab exercises and make sure he strengthens the knee so his knee feels stable and stronger which in turn will reduce his pain. He also needs to see a physio who can loosen out his quad hams it band and glute which will also free up his movements to a great extent also reducing the intensity of pain.
Next Steps
He needs to continue with the rehab exercises and had to be regular with them so that his knee can feel stable and less painful.
