You can give honey to the child, will reduce the irritability. If the child has continuously cough please get him examined and provide him with adequate medicines as advised by the doctor. Cough only at midnight which wakes him up from his sleep could suggest dust allergy, please keep the surroundings clear of dust especially the fan blades, window rails . This should help.
