2 yr Toddler Sleep Issues
Dear Doctors, My son has some concerns I'd like your guidance on. He jerks frequently during sleep and cannot sleep independently. Someone must hold him to sleep, and if left alone he wakes crying within 30 minutes. This started before his eczema diagnosis. He sleeps in fetal position, is a hot sleeper, sweats heavily and loses fluids at night. Sleep heart rate is around 100–120 bpm. Previously seborrheic dermatitis, now atopic dermatitis. Total IgE >2500 with dust mite, fungi and yeast sensitivities. My questions: 1. Could sleep jerking be neurological or allergy related? 2. Is 100–120 bpm normal during sleep? 3. Is poor sleep worsening his skin? 4. Should we do any tests or  scanning? Thank you.

We understand your concern but with these types of complaints and symptoms, he needs to be examined. Jerks can be benign or something which needs to be taken care of. Similarity features of eczema with jerks , his development needs to be assessed and history also needs to be taken . You should consult a pediatrician

You haven’t mentioned your child’s exact age, that would help guide better. Sleep jerks are usually benign and more related to sleep pattern or discomfort like itching from eczema rather than neurological cause. Heart rate 100–120 during sleep can be normal if the child is otherwise well. Yes, poor sleep and itching can worsen each other. For now focus on good skin care and proper sleep routine. No need for tests/scans unless there are abnormal movements when awake, developmental concerns or daytime symptoms.
